NAJU (Naturschutzjugend im NABU)

Every year, NAJU youth delegates take part in the political negotiations at the UN World Climate Conference and the UN Biodiversity Conference to represent the voices of young people. The young delegates present their experiences and engage in discussions with the participants.

The climate and biodiversity crisis continues to progress, and the young generation will be affected by the impacts of the crises for the longest time. However, key decisions on climate and biodiversity protection are not made at national level, but at international level. In order to give young people the opportunity to contribute their opinions and to represent the views of young people, NAJU sends youth delegates to the World Climate Change and World Nature Conservation Conferences every year.

In recent years, young people have increasingly demanded and taken up more space in political debates and processes. The youth environmental associations support these concerns structurally, ideally and practically. For years, youth delegates from NAJU and other associations have been involved in the complex political negotiations at the Conferences of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity. Together with youth delegates from other associations and groups, the “NAJU for Climate” delegation has been involved in the climate conferences since 2019, seeking diplomatic exchange and drawing attention to the urgency of real climate protection with protest actions.
With the “Voice for Biodiv” delegation, NAJU has been sending a youth delegation of up to six (NAJU) activists to the World Nature Conservation Conferences since 2012. The youth delegates not only contribute young people's voices to the negotiations on the ground, but also report on the agreement and the conference through many channels, thereby campaigning for the important protection of biodiversity. The NAJU youth delegation “Voice for Biodiv” is supported by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.
Following an insight into the work of the youth delegations in the field, which recently attended the World Climate Change Conference in Baku (Azerbaijan) and the World Nature Conservation Conference in Cali (Colombia), NAJU wants to discuss the opportunities and limits of youth participation at international level at this event.
